A few weeks ago I posted about a series of bad pitches that possibly cost the Red Sox a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
At the time I wrote:

Well it’s happened again. During yesterday’s Dodgers-Rockies game, umpire Tim Welke called Jerry Hairston out at 1st, despite the throw pulling 1B Todd Helton completely off the bag.

Fortunately for baseball none of these errors can be linked to definitive wins and losses. In the example from my original post, Cody Ross might have grounded into an out or struck out swinging. And in the Dodgers example there was plenty of game left.
But seriously, it’s time to either hold the umpires responsible for these kinds of plays or consider instant replay on debatable calls. At some point it’s going to start costing teams games.
